Daily News From Hawk’s Point
New Cabin Built For Inclusiveness
Wah-Tut-Ca Scout Reservation is over 80 years old. It’s one of the few pre-WWII camps still operating in the nation. Tens of thousands of people have lifelong memories of their experiences at WTCSR. Thousands call it home.
Yet it was built primarily to serve males. For most of its history a female camp staff member would be rare. Usually a nurse. Last summer young women made up more than quarter of the Camp staff. From the beginning finding housing for females has been difficult. With the increase in female participation it has been even more difficult.
Part of the Spirit Of Adventure Council’s strategic plan has been to re-tool camp facilities to make them more accessible to girls.
Using a pre-approved Covid-19 working protocol, construction on a new cabin at WTCSR has been progressing over the last several weeks. This cabin will be used in summer to house female staff members. It is also being built as a 4-season cabin that can be rented and used by units in the off-season.
The new cabin is named “Hawk’s Point” and dedicated to Henry, “Hank” Manchester. Hank was and outdoorsman and great supporter of Scouting and Wah-Tut-Ca Scout Reservation. He served as a Scoutmaster for Troops 88, 11, and 30. All three of his sons earned Eagle rank. Professionally he served as an engineer for Raytheon and designed many weapons systems including “The Tomahawk” cruise missile.
The cabin is being funded by the Manchester Family and The Key Foundation. Since late March the Manchester family and friends have been doing the construction. When completed it will sleep 8 and be serviced with electricity and baseboard heating. The cabin is expected to be completed this fall. Hank’s granddaughters are looking forward to spending their first night in Hawk’s Point
